Shalom and welcome to today’s blog! At the Dumbo Gan in DUMBO, we are dedicated to helping preschool children learn and grow through play, active participation, and hands-on learning experiences — natural, effective, and proven learning methods for children.
Since we believe in fostering a warm and safe environment where children learn through play, active participation, and hands-on experiences, we thought it would be beneficial to dive into the importance and advantages of our teaching philosophy.
What Is Hands-On Learning?
Hands-on learning is a type of learning experience where knowledge is gained by physically doing something, rather than just watching reading or listening about it in a lecture-type setting. During hands-on learning experiences, children collaborate, play, create, explore, and investigate, resulting in engaging and valuable learning experiences.
Examples Of Hands-On Learning Experiences:
- Counting manipulatives
- Making a name puzzle
- Playing letter bingo
- Creating patterns
- Going on a color scavenger hunt
Benefits Of Hands-On Learning
Think back to your early childhood education. Chances are you don’t remember exactly what you learned while you were just sitting in your chair listening to the teacher. What you most likely do remember, however, are the fun activities you participated in that got you out of your chair and moving. These types of learning activities are the ones that kept you interested in the lesson, allowed you to communicate with your peers, enabled you to grow, and made you enjoy learning. Let’s explore these benefits.
Higher Level Of Engagement
Even as adults, it can be difficult to sit in a lecture-type setting and be fully engaged with the speaker. With nothing to do, except for listen, our minds easily wander to what is for dinner, who needs to go where after school, what you need to get at the grocery store, etc.; and if it is difficult for adults to sit through a lecture, imagine how difficult it is for a preschooler. Hands-on learning allows children to work both their bodies and minds, keeping them engaged in the lesson.
Opportunities For Collaboration
Unlike its counterpart, hands-on learning gives children the opportunity to work together, collaborate, and learn from one another. Through hands-on learning and collaboration children can learn valuable lifelong skills such as, teamwork, problem solving, and listening to their peers’ ideas.
Deeper Learning Experiences
As we mentioned above, the learning experiences that you remember as a kid are most likely not the ones you spent sitting in front of the teacher, but perhaps the times where you made letters out of pretzels, went on a color scavenger hunt, or created a beaded necklace using a pattern that you designed. That is because the lesson went beyond learning, but also to experiencing. Hands-on learning engages your body and your mind which results in better knowledge attainment and a more enjoyable learning experience.
Development Of A Lifelong Love For Learning
Hands-on learning is fun, engaging, and effective. Children love playing, exploring, working together, and discovering new things about the world around them. In turn, this fosters a desire for new experiences and continuously expanding their knowledge lifelong.
